How to become a
civil engineer?
There
are 2 ways for you to become a civil engineer. One is diploma in civil
engineering and the other is degree in civil engineering. After graduation, you
can even choose a post- graduation course for specialization.
Diploma
course is of 3 years duration and should be chosen after class 10. For choosing
a graduate degree, you need to take national or state level entrance test. The
duration of course is 4yeras.
Once
you complete your degree, you can start your career as a civil engineer. If you
are still interested, you can go for post- graduation to get a specialization.
Know your area of interest. Start early.
Have
you been fascinated by buildings? Do you have a strong liking for modern structures?
Then you have a strong liking for the field of civil engineering. Civil
engineering is an area where we can do something useful for the society.
You
need to start early and work on a strong foundation in mathematics, physics and
chemistry from 10+2. This knowledge will be of immense use during your
graduation study.
Is the right career for me?
Once
your are done with knowing your area of interest, you should be ready for
various jobs that have to be done by a civil engineer. Main job of any civil
engineer is to design and supervise the construction of buildings. Good
knowledge in mathematics and science and good supervisory skills makes it easy
for you becoming a civil engineer.
You
should be ready to sweat out in the hot sun and work at construction sites.
Civil engineer work can be stressful at times and you should be able to handle
the stress. If think you can fit into the bills, then civil engineering is the
right career for you.
What does it cost to become a civil engineer?
It
completely depends upon the institution which you join. Some private institutes
charge around 2lakhs for your course of 4years. However, in established
government universities the fee may range between 15,000-20,000 Rs annually.
Chances of scholarships/ funding
Very
few colleges offer scholarships at graduation level. The scholarships will be
given on merit basis. Various state governments offer scholarships and stipend
for students based on merit and for economically backward students also.
Job Prospectus
There
is a huge demand for civil engineers in today’s world. This scenario seems to
rise in coming days because of the growing economic and political clout in the
world. In a country like India, where development of infrastructure is the
prime objective, civil engineers have endless opportunities. Civil engineers
are employed by both public and private organizations for various construction
projects. There is also an opening for civil engineers in the armed forces,
where they can make great contribution to the protection of country. Last but
not the least; you can have your own engineering consultancy.
Pay Scale
The
pay scale of a civil engineer depends on various factors like the educational qualification,
status of the company, location of work and so on. Usually a civil engineer can
expect a starting salary of 15000-20000 Rs. With experience in construction
sites and upgrading skils continuously, salary increases in leaps and bounds.

- In big cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi etc civil engineers are paid on par with IT professionals.

- You will have to undergo six moths to a year of training before you get a full-time job in the industry.
- Construction industry is vulnerable to fluctuations in the economy.
- Civil engineers often work in varied settings shifting from posh modern offices to job sites in extremely remote areas.
- The job often involves frequent traveling.
